A walnut a day can help keep age-related health issues at bay

Researchers have found that daily consumption of walnuts could help in health issues related to old age such as cholesterol problems and also improve critical thinking, according to a research published in the British Journal of Nutrition. This research was led by Peter Pribis, associate professor of nutrition and wellness at Andrews University.

A study published in Metabolism indicates a diet with walnuts may reduce cardiovascular disease risk significantly by reducing non-HDL cholesterol1 and apolipoprotein B2 (ApoB) – two predictors of cardiovascular disease risk.

Diet is a primary component to fight against heart disease. Walnuts are full of nutrients that not only protect your heart but also improve your heart health by maintaining optimum blood lipid levels along with keeping cholesterol and blood pressure in check.

There are hundreds of studies supporting the benefits of walnuts in the diet. Walnuts, like many other nuts, are great sources of protein too. The findings also showed that intake of walnuts can boost the good fats and nutrients and lower the heart risk and blood cholesterol levels.

The oil found in walnuts could maintain better blood vessel function after a meal, which is very important. The blood vessel integrity is often compromised in people with cardiovascular disease, says Claire Berryman, a graduate student of nutritional sciences at PSU.

“Walnut oil is good at preserving the function of endothelial cells, which is another important factor in improving cardiovascular health.”

Numerous other studies have also found that eating walnuts help to lower high blood pressure and reduce heart risk since walnut contains antioxidant nutrients. These are enriched with gamma tocopherol, carotenoids, phytosterols, and polyphenols (especially ellagitannins), which may also help effectively as a preventive remedy for avoiding breast cancer and prostate cancer and  also give protection against cancer development.

According to researchers at University of California Los Angeles, Walnuts also have a positive effect on sperm development and help in boosting male fertility, thereby improving semen quality in men. The researchers after the detailed study found the results very promising.

According to other researchers, walnuts also provide a rich source of a-linolenic acid, a natural plant source of omega-3, which is responsible for the improvements in male fertility.

The key to better memory improved critical thinking and overall better health could be as simple as having few wall nuts every day due to powerful defense against many age-health related problems.
