This is the easiest thing you can do to boost your memory: just sip on some delicious peppermint tea.
A recent study has revealed that peppermint has properties to improve your memory. The research was conducted by Dr. Mark Moss, Robert Jones and Lucy Moss of Northumbria University who presented their research at the British Psychological Society’s Annual Conference in Nottingham.
The researchers performed an experiment on 180 volunteers who were asked to fill out a questionnaire relating to their moods and then random volunteers were given peppermint tea, chamomile tea and hot water to drink.
After an interval of 20 minutes, the participants were subjected to tests that analyzed their memory power and various cognitive functions. At the end, they had to go through another questionnaire about their moods.
In conclusion, the researchers discovered that peppermint tea significantly enhanced working memory and long-term memory compared to the other two drinks. Peppermint tea also increased alertness among the participants. Chamomile tea, on the other hand, slowed down memory and also affected the attention span. Mark Ross added that peppermint has always had the reputation of improving mental abilities. Chamomile has the contrasting effect of calming the mental processes, which is why it is popular as a nighttime tea.
The participants who drank peppermint tea were able to remember objects, images and respond to tasks more efficiently than those who drank chamomile tea. Chamomile had a soothing effect, which caused others to lag behind.
The research also included the effects of rosemary and lavender on memory. Rosemary was found to improve memory while lavender induced calmness and comfort.
Moss concluded by saying that it is very interesting to witness the effects of different herbs on the mind and the body. The research proves that people can lead a healthy life by introducing certain herbal teas into their regimen.
