Acupuncture can reduce menopausal woes

Menopause comes with a lot of issues and discomfort while it is inevitable for every woman, its effects can be reduced to a great extent. A study conducted by Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center reveals that acupuncture can reduce the symptoms of menopause by 36%.

The common woes of menopause are night sweats and hot flashes, which are very uncomfortable. The study has proven that such symptoms can be reduced by acupuncture treatment.

Nancy Avis, the main author of the research says while acupuncture might not work for every woman but for those it works, it can decrease the frequency of hot flashes and the effects can persist up to six months post treatment.

209 women between the ages of 45-60 who have not had their periods for 3 months and have experienced night sweats or hot flashes about 4 times a day in a previous couple of weeks of the experiment were involved in the study.

The participants underwent assessments and were divided into two groups. The women in the first group received acupuncture treatment for six months and the following six months they did not undergo any treatment. The second group went with no treatment for the first six months and the second six months, they were treated with acupuncture.

The participants underwent 20 acupuncture sessions over the course of six months and also maintained a diary to record the frequency of hot flashes and other symptoms. They were also asked to fill out questionnaires on various symptoms at an interval of two months.

At the end of six months, it was found that the first group experienced 36.7% less frequent hot flashes and the effect continued for another six months with 29% reduction from the initial measurements.

Participants in the second group suffered 6% increase in their symptoms in the first six months when they were not treated but in the second half of the trial when they were undergoing acupuncture treatment there was 31% reduction in their symptoms.

Avis added that there are many non-hormonal treatments to reduce the effects of menopause but there is no guarantee that they will work for every woman.

The study published in the journal Menopause— ANI, suggests that acupuncture is an effective option to treat menopausal woes with no side effects.
