7 foods to increase lactation

When you become a mother, you are always concerned about eating foods which help with the supply of breast milk. Foods with lactation promoting properties are called lactogenic food. Breast milk contains nutrients which help in the development of the brain and the overall growth of the newborn.

A few foods that increase lactation are as follows:

  1. Oatmeal: Oatmeal is full of fiber and energy. It contains properties which help in maintain your blood pressure and the level of cholesterol in your body. It also helps in preventing the occurrence of diabetes after pregnancy.
  2. Carrot: Carrot is rich in Vitamin D. It helps in improving the quality and quantity of milk supply. Carrot juice is best for breast feeding mothers.
  3. Bottle gourd: Bottle gourd has high water content. This results in keeping the body of the breastfeeding mother hydrated and helps in improving the quality and quantity of milk produced.
  4. Spinach: Spinach is rich in Vitamins K and A. They contain phytoestrogens which keep the breast tissue healthy and facilitate lactation.
  5. Brown rice: Brown rice is a complex carbohydrate. It increases the production and supply of milk in breast feeding mothers. It also results in maintaining the level of energy, sleep, mood and appetite of the mother.
  6. Papaya: The properties of papaya can help to keep the breast tissue healthy and improve lactation.
  7. Apricots: Apricots are rich in potassium, fiber, Vitamins A and C and calcium. They also contain tryptophan which increases the level of prolactin. Prolactin is the hormone which stimulates the production of breast milk.

Apart from eating make sure that you drink lots of water. This is because it keeps your body hydrated and increases the supply of milk.
