Ways to Avoid Bone Infections

By Dr Sandeep ChauhanOrthopaedics

Bone infections or osteomyelitis (inflammation of the bones) is a rare disorder but a severe one. Bones can either be infected because of open surgeries or infections from other parts of the body may affect the bones via the bloodstream. It is usually caused by a bacterium called Staphylococcus aureus.

Certain factors that weaken the immune system make you prone to bone infections:

  1. Diabetes
  2. Excessive alcohol consumption
  3. Steroid use
  4. Improper blood circulation in the body.
  6. Any injury to the body that might go on to affect the bones as well
  7. Surgery related to bones such as hip replacement
  8. The disorder develops over a period of 8-10 days.

Treatment and Prevention

  • Symptoms such as nausea, fever, swelling in the affected area and reduced range of motion in the concerned body part. Prevention would require checking for such symptoms.
  • Bone biopsy is essential for the correct diagnosis and also to determine the exact organism responsible for this so that medications can be administered accordingly.
  • The treatment for this disorder usually involves antibiotics and surgery. Antibiotics can help in easing the infection; if this method does not work, then you need to undergo surgery.

Further Tips-

  1. If you want to prevent bone infections from occurring, then it is best to follow proper personal hygiene.
  2. In case of deep wounds, clean them properly to get rid of the germs. Once the area is cleaned, use bandages to wrap it up.
  3. Being diabetic may cause infections to develop on your feet; hence keep an eye out for them.
