Sexual dysfunction also termed as sexual disorder is a difficulty experienced by an individual or a couple during any stage of a Sexual Response Cycle as mentioned below:

Stage 1: Excitement

Stage 2: Plateau

Stage 3: Orgasm

Stage 4: Resolution

Both men and women experience these stages at some or the other point – usually different timings for male and female.

Classification of Sexual Dysfunctions:

  1. Lack of sexual desire or interest in sex.
  2. High Sex Drive
  3. Inability to become physically aroused or excited during sexual activity.
  4. Delay or Absence of the BIG O i.e. Orgasm or climax.
  5. Pain during intercourse.
  6. Lack of Lubrication in Females.
  7. Premature Ejaculation.
  8. Impotence.

Causes of Sexual Dysfunction:

Innervations of the organs of sexuality are mediated primarily through the autonomic nervous system and everything that affects the autonomic nervous system also affects the sexuality. Sexual dysfunction can affect any age, although it is more common in those over 40 because it is often related to a decline in health associated with aging.

Physical Causes:

These conditions include diabetes, heart and vascular disease, neurological disorders, hormonal imbalances, chronic diseases such as kidney or liver failure, alcoholism and drug abuse. In addition, the side effects of some medications, including some antidepressant drugs, can affect sexual function.

Psychological Causes:

These include work stress, sexual performance related concern, marital or relationship problems, depression, feelings of guilt, concerns about body image and also the effects of a past sexual trauma.

Ayurveda: A boon to deal with the Sexual Disorders

Ayurveda, the science of life, prevention and longevity, is the oldest organized Indian medical system. It is frequently referred as ‘Ashtanga Ayurveda’ as it has eight parts, as follows:

  1. Kaya Chikitsa: Internal and external treatments for the body.
  2. Bala Chikitsa: Diseases related to infants
  3. Graha Chikitsa: Healing of psychological problems
  4. Urdvanga Chikitsa: Treatments related to the Ear, Nose and Throat region
  5. Salya Chikitsa: Surgeries and operations
  6. Visha Chikitsa: Toxicology
  7. Rasayana Prakarana: Methods to rejuvenate the sapta dhatus (Seven Humors)
  8. Vajikarana or Vrishya Chikitsa: Science of aphrodisiacs, virility and improving health of progeny

The 8th part deals with Sexual Concerns: In Sanskrit, Vaji means horse, the symbol of sexual potency and performance thus Vajikaran means producing a horse’s vigor, particularly the animal’s great capacity for sexual activity in the individual.

Literally the Vajikaran is not exactly aphrodisiac but the current connotational meaning is same. The man who seeks pleasure should resort to Vajikaran therapy regularly. The Vajikaran bestows contentment, nourishment, continuity of progeny and great happiness.

The medicines or therapy by which the man becomes capable of sexual intercourse with the woman with great strength like a horse, which endears him to women and which nourishes the body of the person is known as Vajikaran. It is best promoter of strength and vigor. The main aim of Vajikaran is always successful copulation for healthy reproduction with sexual pleasure being just an additional benefit.

However, this therapy is also described under various sexual and reproductive disease i.e., Klaibya or Erectile dysfunctions, Bandhyatva or Infertility, Shukraghata Vata or azospermia and premature ejaculationVajikaran chikitsa requires living in strict compliance to the directions mentioned in Ayurvedic classics. It involves various methods of shodhan (body cleansing) through vaman (emesis), virechan (purgation) and swedan (sweating).

After the Shodhan therapy, based on the prakriti of the individual’s imbalance (doshic body constitution-Tridosha theory), certain herbal and herbo-mineral combinations are administered. Other components in the therapy involves improving health and pleasure in general like, massaging with medicated herbal oils and herbal baths, wearing of fragrant garlands, anointing the body with fragrant herbal pastes, listening to music, etc.

Vajikaran therapy revitalizes body elements, therefore, restores equilibrium and health. As per the concept of Ayurveda, it offers a solution to minimize the shukra (sperm and ovum) defects to ensure a healthy progeny.

Note: Vajikaran therapy is not recommended for the the person below 17 years and more than 70 years of age. Every couple should enjoy a healthy sex life since it’s an important part of such relationship.
