Oil or sebum comes from the sebaceous glands; and people who have overactive sebaceous glands produce excess sebum, contributing to the oily look of their skin. Oily skin comes with its own fair share of problems, some of which are:
1. Acne: too much oil attracts the bacteria and clogs pores, leading to acne breakout
2. Shine: oily skin looks excessively shiny and greasy
3. Runny cosmetics: you have to blot and reapply makeup often due to oily skin
The good thing is that you can get rid of these problems simply by adopting some measures to stop excessive oil production from the skin.
These ways are:
1. Treating oily skin with topical products
Using a gentle, pH balanced cleanser for cleansing your face twice a day can be really helpful. Also, use warm water, not hot while washing your face to avoid irritation.
Use a toner free of alcohol or acetone especially on oily parts of your face rather than the whole face as that can help curb oil production.
Also, you can make use of a light, oil-free moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. Clay masks work just as well and help in drawing out dirt and oil, keeping the pores clean and oil-free. Moreover, applying an oil-free, mineral powder makeup base during the daytime can control excessive oil on the face.
2. Avoiding triggers
Harsh soaps and products containing alcohol can irritate your skin, so it’s best to avoid them. Even over washing the face can worsen the condition, so you should not wash your face more than twice a day. Try and avoid products that clog your pores, as they trap oil and dirt, thereby worsening acne symptoms.
3. Consider your diet
Foods that are high in fats, sugars, and unhealthy oils can aggravate your skin, increasing inflammation and complicating skin problems further. Healthy fruits and green vegetables are advisable for improving skin condition. You should also cut down on sugar-sweetened beverages to maintain oil-free skin.
