An open wound is one which involves a breakage in the body tissue which affects the skin. There may be various kinds of open wounds, such as:
Causes of open wounds
1.Rubbing or scraping of the skin.
This is one of the major causes of an open wound. If the skin rubs or scraps against a rough surface it automatically leads to the breakage of the body tissue resulting in a lot of bleeding.
Sharp objects like knives or shards of glass can damage ligaments and muscles along with the skin tissue. Wounds caused by bullets are also open puncture wounds.
Complications of open wounds
Open wounds are generally considered harmless but if untreated they can lead to serious complications, such as:
1.Bleeding and swelling
One of the main risks of an untreated open wound is the fear of an infection. It may often lead to incessant bleeding and swelling.
An untreated open wound for a long time may lead to a high fever. The person who is suffering from the wound may have fever over 100.4 degree for some time.
If the wound is not treated for a long time then a thick green and yellow color pus may fill the region and be discharged.
4.Swelling in groin and armpit
In most cases a wound that has not been treated for a long time leads to a tender lump near the groin and the armpit.
5.No response to medicines.
An open wound which is left untreated for a long period of time may stop responding to medication. Refusal of a wound to heal is one of the major complications of an open wound.
