Hypertension is a condition which is characterised by elevated blood pressure in the arteries. This condition can be a result of aging, stress or a poor diet (including an unhealthy lifestyle as well). In the present day, hypertension is mainly caused due to an unhealthy diet as the food you consume is packed with preservatives. This causes the toxins to accumulate in your body, thus causing hypertension. Lack of exercise and excessive intake of caffeinated beverages can also cause hypertension. A blood pressure count above 140/90 over a sustained period of time is categorized as ‘hypertension’.
Hypertension, if allowed to sustain for long, can result in grave problems such as coronary diseases, heart stroke, vision loss, kidney failure and in some cases, a heart failure.
Symptoms of Hypertension-
- Excessive fatigue
- Body ache
In Ayurveda, hypertension is referred to as ‘Rakta Gata Vata’ and various remedies can help in getting rid of hypertension.
Listed below are a few dietary recommendations for those who are suffering from hypertension:
- Avoid salty and stale food which increases the hypertention.
- Avoid or limit foods that are high in saturated fat. Food high in this type of fat include: egg yolks, hard cheeses, whole milk, cream, ice cream, butter, and fatty meats (and large portions of meats).
- Choose lean protein foods. These include soy, fish, skinless chicken, very lean meat, and fat-free or 1% fat dairy products.
- Limit how much fried and processed foods you eat.
Role of shirodhara: Shirodhara is extremely beneficial for people suffering from imbalance of Vata and Pitta. Shirodhara involves the use of such liquids that help to counter the negative effects of the out-of-balance doshas or conditions. The liquid soothes and pacifies the doshas when applied to the forehead, scalp and nervous system. A person suffering from anxiety disorder, stress, hypertension, fatigue, tension, worry, head ache and depression can opt for this Ayurvedic treatment.
