Nerve pain can be long-term; it can bother you for months or years. Sometimes the pain remains the same, or it can gradually worsen over time. Thus, management of nerve pain in your daily life is necessary.
Usually, nerve damage causes nerve pain. Injuries, diabetes, effects of chemotherapy or certain drugs can also cause nerve pain.
Sudden nerve pain can be extremely disruptive. You may be at work, or doing something when the pain strikes. To counter such a sudden onset, here are some strategies you can use daily:
- If you are diabetic, keep a close check on your blood sugar levels. When your sugar levels are normal, you can prevent diabetic nerve pain from occurring frequently.
- Endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, are released when you exercise. So, to ease pain, you can walk daily to release endorphins and improve blood circulation.
- If your feet are affected by pain the most, start wearing comfortable shoes; and when the pain strikes, massage your feet gently to reduce pain.
- Take a warm bath to reduce pain. This boosts blood circulation and also reduces stress.
- Limit your alcohol consumption since it increases the pain.
- Get adequate sleep and stay off caffeine to better manage pain.
- Capsaicin cream (derived from chili pepper), lidocaine and geranium oil can be of great help to duce pain.
- Meditating or light yoga daily can also provide much relief because they help relax the entire body and the mind.
