Robotic Surgery: Advantages Of The Procedure!

By Dr. Aasim Anees Hussain, General Surgery

Robotic surgery, also known as a ‘robot-assisted surgery’, is a minimally invasive surgery that surgeons perform to conduct many complex procedures with more flexibility, precision and control as compared to conventional techniques.

Types of Robotic Surgery
Robotic surgery is of different types and can be performed to treat a number of diseases. The most common types of robotic surgery are-

  1. Robotic Gynecology Surgery
  2. Robotic Prostate Surgery
  3. Robotic Kidney Surgery
  4. Robotic Colorectal Surgery
  5. Robotic Gallbladder Surgery

How is the surgery performed?
During the procedure, the doctor uses surgical instruments that fit through a sequence of quarter-inched incisions. When Robotic surgery is performed using the world’s most advanced surgical robot, da Vinci Si, these miniaturized instruments are arranged on three separate arms. This allows the surgeon the maximum range of precision and motion. The fourth arm of the robotic instrument consists of a magnified high-definition 3D camera, which allows the surgeon to get a clear view of the surgical site.

The surgeon controls the camera and these instruments from a console situated in the operating room. He is able to control the arms of the da Vinci by placing his fingers on the master control while looking at a stereoscopic HD monitor. The robot precisely replicates every movement that the surgeon makes.

The surgeon can even change the scale of movements of the robot when required. For instance, if he selects a three-to-one scale, the tip of the arm of the robot will move an inch for every three inches the surgeon moves his hand.

Advantages of Robotic Surgery
There are many advantages of undergoing a robotic surgery. Since it is a minimally invasive procedure, patients experience several benefits as compared to an open surgery. Some of the benefits are as follows-

  • Minimal scarring
  • Less trauma and fewer complications on the body
  • Faster recovery
  • Less blood loss and pain

Due to its manifold advantages, Robotic surgery is considered a safe and effective method of treatment for gynecological, nephrology problems.
