Vitiligo is a condition where the affected loses skin colour in patches. This means that while some portions of the skin remain normal, other portions have a pasty an unnatural shade to it. In some people, the patches may be minimal, while in others, it can cover most of their body.

The exact cause for the condition remains unknown, but there are some theories regarding the same in the medical community.

Cause of Vitiligo-
Vitiligo occurs when pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) in the body stop producing melanin. This may be due to one of the following factors-

  1. Improper functioning of the immune system, leading it to attack the melanocytes.
  2. Family history of the condition.
  3. Exposure to industrial chemicals or sunburn.

Complications arising from Vitiligo
Due to the lack of melanin in some parts of the body, the patients face a greater risk-

  1. Skin cancer and sunburn
  2. Loss of hearing
  3. Problems in the eye, such as iritis

Additionally, they also face emotional and social distress, due to the skin condition.

Role of Ayurveda in treating Vitiligo
Ayurveda recognizes Vitiligo as Switra and its very specific routine for the treatment of the condition. The disease itself is divided into three parts under Ayurveda. They are-

  1. Daruna- In this kind, the dosha affects the blood of the person affected, leading to patchy red spots.
  2. Aruna- In this type of the condition, the muscle tissues are affected by the dosha causing copper coloured patches.
  3. Kilasa- If the dosha affects the fatty tissue in the body, the skin patches will be pale. This is the most common form of vitiligo.

The treatment procedure involves three aspects. These include-

  1. Detoxifying the body from within
  2. Medications, both oral and topical, can be used to treat the conditions as well
  3. Following a healthy diet is a vital part of the Ayurvedic remedy for Vitiligo
