Acne is a chronic condition of the skin where the skin gets inflamed at points and gives rise to pimples. These are the most common on faces, but can also be found on neck, shoulders, back, upper arms etc. Though it is a self-limiting and benign condition, it may make the face unsightly.
Modern treatment for acne includes topical applications containing benzoyl peroxide or Azelaic acid. For severe outbreaks doctors also prescribe antibiotics or retinoids. For women, doctors may prescribe pills containing anti-androgenic elements. Yet such treatment can hardly cure acne. In their search for a satisfactory cure for acne, people have tried different remedies, including Acupuncture. Acupuncture may be able to bring down the severity of the eruptions to some extent.
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical approach. According to Acupuncture therapists the body consists of various meridians for various systems. If there is a disturbance or abnormal flow of energy in one meridian it exhibits a corresponding malady. To treat the malady the doctor has to bring the relevant meridian back to normal. Acupuncture can help in this by hitting the right points and stimulating the relevant nerves, muscles and connective tissue. In fact, many modern doctors think that acupuncture works by stimulating the neurological system. Stimulation may cause the release of neurochemical messengers. This, in turn, may impact the homeostatic balance of the body and thereby bring about a positive change in the condition. The therapist needs to have good knowledge about various meridians and acupuncture points to treat the problem effectively.
Acupuncture And Acne
Studies have shown that a combination of acupuncture and moxibustion is effective in the treatment of acne. In one study moderate acne was treated with Acupuncture. The person had experienced a reduction in acne eruptions. In another study moxibustion was used before acupuncture to warm the intended areas on the targeted meridian. The second study has proved to be more effective in the treatment of acne. It shows that acupuncture is useful to some extent in the treatment of acne, but it is more useful in the presence of warming stuff like moxibustion. While moxibustion can warm up intended areas and invigorate energy channels, acupuncture can revive the normal flow of energy and cure problems.
How Acupuncture May Help In Acne?
You can go to an Acupuncture practitioner to get rid of your acne problem. The procedure may help through the following mechanisms:
Reducing inflammation by promoting release of immune-modulatory factors
Enhancing the activities of natural killer cells as well as modulating the ratio of immune cells
Increasing blood microcirculation locally and thereby helping in dispersal of the swelling
Acne is a persistent problem and Acupuncture may be helpful in reducing the severity of these eruptions. However, the therapist has to have the right knowledge about meridians and important points along with them
