Intrauterine Insemination is a reproductive medical procedure via which the sperm is placed inside the uterus of a woman to initiate the process of fertilization. The aim of IUI is to increase the number of sperm cells that arrive at the fallopian tubes thereby increasing the chances of fertilization which would result in pregnancy. Read on to find out more.

Why is IUI used?
IUI is used generally for reasons such as low sperm count and low sperm motility. However, the procedure can also be used if the following conditions are prevalent:

  1. Unexplainable infertility
  2. Ejaculation dysfunction
  3. Low sperm count and motility

IUI is, however, not recommended in every scenario as women who suffer from frequent pelvic infections, disease of the fallopian tubes and severe endometriosis are advised against it.

Success-
The success rate of IUI is dependent on several factors. The Overall success rate of IUI is 20 – 25%. Other factors such as the use of fertility drugs, female age during the time of conception, the reason for infertility also contribute in determining the success of IUI procedure. When IUI is done sperms are pushed into the uterus. If the couple has decided to opt for an IUI procedure, they should consult a physician before going for the process.
