An abscess, or pus-filled lump, in the brain usually leads to infections in the brain.

A brain infection forms when bacteria, virus or fungi travel to your brain through the bloodstream. The bacteria or fungi usually enter your body through an open wound on some other part of your body.

Causes-

The causes of brain infections include:

  1. Weakened immune system due to AIDS or HIV
  2. Cancer
  3. Congenital heart diseases
  4. Skull fracture or major head trauma
  5. Meningitis (Inflammation of the spinal cord and brain membranes)
  6. Chemotherapy (Immunosuppressant drugs are harmful)
  7. Chronic sinus
  8. Ear infections

Symptoms-

Symptoms that develop include:

  1. Cognitive difficulties
  2. Decreased speech
  3. Decreased sensation
  4. Loss of muscle function, which decreases movement
  5. Vision changes
  6. Behaviour or personality changes
  7. Chills
  8. Nausea
  9. Fever

Treatment-

Since brain infection is a serious condition, a hospital stay is required. Treatment depends on size, location and number of abscesses. Treatment includes surgical drainage followed by antibiotics or antibiotics alone.

Prevention-

The best way to prevent brain infection is to monitor any underlying condition, such as a heart disorder that you might have; and taking antibiotics prescribed by your doctor before urological or dental procedures.
