Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery done by plastic surgeons that involves the removal of fat from the body by using suction. This process involves insertion of thin, small and blunt tubes called ‘cannula’ into the skin which are connected to a suction device known as ‘aspirator’. Liposuction for a small area needing less than two litres of liposuction is an outpatient procedure and generally does not require an overnight stay at the hospital. Usually, local anaesthesia is utilized in this procedure. For large volume liposuction to remove huge amounts of fat indoor care & regional or general anaesthesia is needed.
Liposuction is a procedure that is purely aesthetic in nature. Reduction of weight is not the main objective; but to reshape certain parts of your body by getting rid of the fat. It is generally preferred for areas in your body which do not respond to either exercises or diet, such as the buttocks, upper arms and the legs. In some cases, it is combined with other procedures such as face lift, breast reduction and abdominoplasty.
There are multiple liposuction techniques such as:
- Tumescent liposuction
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction
- Power-assisted liposuction
Liposuction is one of the most popular & rewarding body contouring procedure for undesired resistant fat deposits at certain areas in indicated persons. Also certain medical conditions such as fatty tumours, lipomas, and enlargement of the male breasts are treated by liposuction. You will notice an improvement in your body shape immediately after the procedure. The skin around the area where the procedure has been performed may be initially loose but it becomes normal again after few months.
After the procedure, a course of antibiotics & analgesics is be prescribed. For tightening of loose skin elastic liposuction garments are advised for few weeks. The recovery period is around a few days to few weeks depending on amount of liposuction done.
