A bunion is a bump that is formed on the bone at the base of your toe. A bunion is caused when the big toe is pushed against the next toe. This forces the big toe joint to become much bigger and sticks out. The skin present over this area tends to sore and turns red which causes itchiness.

A bunion is mainly caused when people wear shoes which are tight and narrow. Structural defect or an accident can also cause a person to suffer from Bunion. It can cause serious pain and irritation when a person walks or moves around. Bunion does not allow the person to put a firm step on the ground but he or she has to use soft steps to move.

Symptoms - bunion has several symptoms which helps you to identify whether the person is suffering from it or not.  Here are some of the most common symptoms of a bunion.

  • There will be a bulging bump on the outside of the foot base, more precisely near the big toe.
  • The person might experience swelling, redness or itchiness around the big toe joint or finger.
  • Corns or calluses may develop, especially around the area where the first and second toes overlap.
  • Persistent or chronic pain will be common.
  • Unable to move quickly because of pain due to the firm or strong stepping on the ground.

Risks - if Binions are not treated at the right time, then they can cause some serious issues like -

  1. Bursitis - which is a very painful condition that takes place when small fluid-filled pads called bursae which cushion bones, tendons and muscles near your joints gets seriously inflamed.
  2. Hammertoe - an abnormal bend on the middle joint of the person’s toe, which is usually the toe next to the big toe. It can cause chronic pain and pressure.
  3. Metatarsalgia - an abnormal condition which results in pain and serious inflammation around the ball present near the foot.

Surgical Treatment - bunion can be effectively treated with the help of various surgical procedures.

  • Surgery by removing the tissue that is swollen around the big toe joint.
  • Surgery to straighten the big toe which will be done by removing part of the bone.
  • Realigning by surgery of the long bone present between the back part of the foot and the big toe.
  • Surgery to join both the bones of your the affected joint permanently.
