Androgens are a group of male hormones. Testosterone is a common androgen. Androgens are found in both, men and women. But the level of androgens in women is much lower than men. However, it is not only women who can suffer from elevated levels of androgens. Excess androgen secretion or hyperandrogenism can affect both, men and women.
Though in general, we call it excess androgens. A better way to explain it is DHT or dihydrotestosterone. The main androgen, testosterone is responsible for most of the symptoms of hyperandrogenism. It is not simply excess secretion of testosterone, but the excessive transformation of testosterone into DHT or a more powerful form of testosterone.
When there is rapid DHT conversation, the usual testosterone levels can drop, causing problems like ED or virility issues in men and mood disorders in women. But excessive DHT takes its toll on the body and mind at the same time.
Effects of Hyperandrogenism -
Hyperandrogenism manifests differently in men and women. The trickiest effect is the effect on hair. Excess of androgens can cause both, baldness and excessive hair growth.
Male pattern baldness is also known as androgenic alopecia. It affects men and women by shrinking the hair follicles. Women suffering from androgenic alopecia get male pattern baldness instead of losing hair the way women usually do.
Sometimes excessive androgens cause women to get facial hair or body hair like men usually do. But baldness can happen at the same time. It is indeed unfortunate that people have hair all over their face and body but none on their head.
Other effects include:
- Acne in females.
- Hoarseness of voice in females and other symptoms of virilization.
- High pitched voice in men due to the reduction in simple testosterone levels.
- Fertility in both men and women.
- Enlarged prostate in men.
- PCOS in women.
- Prostate cancer in men.
- Menstrual complications in women.
Thankfully, the condition is treatable. Controlling the enzymes that produce DHT or controlling overall testosterone secretion is possible through medication and also by alternative medicine like Ayurveda.
Hormone replacement therapy or rebalancing drugs cause some side effects which can make things worse. Ayurveda treats the condition from its root and rebalances hormones with no side effects.
Also, lifestyle changes like getting rid of all kinds of addictions, proper diet and exercise, and mental wellbeing takes hormone health a long way.
With Ayurvedic treatment, there will be no need to treat baldness with excessive hormones, hair follicle injections, or surgery of any sort. It is best to let the hair grow back naturally.
Also, the effects of artificial treatments or medication can be temporary. The baldness might return if the hormones are not actually balanced, or the underlying causes creating the imbalance are still present.
This is why side-effect free Ayurvedic treatment, in combination with healthy lifestyle practices is the best way to treat male pattern baldness in both, men and women.
