Pearly Penile Papules or Hirsutoid Papillomas are tiny growths, usually pink and white in colour, that occur around the tip of the penis. Any man can develop pearly penile papules but these are usually harmless.
Once developed, Hirsutoid Papillomas typically remain for life. With age, the growths may fade but they do not change colour and shape. Although PPP does not spread over time, living with the condition can be frustrating and embarrassing. Therefore, you should seek treatment for the same.
Recent studies suggest that CO2 laser therapy is currently the safest and most effective procedure of removing pearly penile papules.
The laser emits a beam of infrared light, which makes it useful in a surgical procedure, as water absorbs this light frequency very well. When the laser comes in contact with your skin, it essentially vaporizes the infected tissue and stimulates the production of collagen, thus forming new, smooth skin.
Prior to the treatment, local anaesthesia – a topical ointment or cream – will be administered on the corona of the penis to numb the area and reduce discomfort. The entire procedure takes about half an hour.
What to Expect After the Treatment
The treated area may feel numb and you might observe redness or discomfort immediately after the laser therapy. However, these are minor side effects, which go away in a few days. You can expect to get back home the same day since it is an outpatient procedure.
Pearly penile papules are not contagious or harmful and are usually not a cause for concern. Although they are often confused with genital warts, PPP has nothing to do with sexual activity. The new-age CO2 laser therapy can cure the condition with minimal risks and side effects. However, it is best to consult a doctor and know all the details of the procedure beforehand, if you are considering going for laser treatment.
