Hair Fall & Thinning – Know Treatment For Them!

By Dr. Smita Kashyap, Dermatology

Shedding around 50-100 strands of hair each day is considered normal. However, this condition does not result in the thinning of hair in your scalp due to simultaneous growth of new hair. Hair loss happens once this cycle is disrupted that destroys the hair follicles and replaces them with a scar tissue. A number of factors can contribute to hair loss such as medications, medical conditions, hormonal changes or family history. In case of female iron deficiency is most common cause.

Here are a few dermatologically tested methods for treating hair fall and thinning:

  1. Medications: If an underlying disease is the root cause of hair loss, drugs and medications are administered as a part of the treatment.
    • Minoxidil is foam or a liquid you can find over-the-counter. You need to apply it on your scalp at least a couple of times a day. This medicine works effectively for both the genders. Although the effects of it might start seeping in slowly and gradually, continuing with the medicine helps to reap in benefits. It facilitates hair regrowth while delaying hair loss. The probable side effects of this medicine include rapid heartbeat, scalp irritation and the skin adjacent to the face.
    • Finasteride is a drug prescribed only for men and is available in the form of pills to be consumed daily. Consuming this pill initially helps in lowering the rate of hair loss, and eventually, stopping it completely. Certain rare risks accompanying Finasteride include chances of suffering from a dip in the sexual function as well as sex drive. Main side effect of Finestride is difficulty in erection that is only found In 1% case and arrhythmia.
  2. Procedures: The type of procedure that a dermatologist recommends will depend on how much hair you have lost. To achieve the best results, a dermatologist may use one or more of the following procedures:
    • Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy: This is a path-breaking, nonsurgical and natural option that treats the conditions of severe hair loss through hair, scalp, and skin simulations, as per the requirements.
    • Mesotherapy: It is a hair growing technique that is non-invasive. Superficial micro-injections are made below the epidermis of the skin to specific tissues. The term meso has originated from mesoderm which is the second or middle layer of the skin. This treatment can successfully trigger the mesoderm thereby relieving an array of ailments and symptoms. The injected solution is a combination of co-enzymes, amino acids, minerals and vitamins. The solution is tailored to suit each patient’s condition and their treatment plan.
    • Stem Cell Therapy: Stem cells are tiny microscopic cells responsible for repair and regeneration of aged and damaged tissues. This treatment helps regeneration of damaged hair follicles thus, promoting hair growth.
    • Hair Transplantation: Skin on the scalp that has good hair growth is removed and transplanted to areas of the scalp that need hair.
    • Scalp Reduction: Bald scalp is surgically removed and hair-bearing scalp is brought closer together to reduce balding. Scalp reduction surgery can be performed alone or in conjunction with a hair transplant.
    • Scalp Expansion: Devices are inserted under the scalp for about 3 to 4 weeks to stretch the skin. This procedure may be performed before a scalp reduction to make the scalp laxer. It also can be performed solely to stretch hair-bearing areas, which reduces balding.
    • Scalp Flaps: A hair-bearing segment of scalp is surgically moved and placed where hair is needed.
