Unani is an alternative system of medicine that originated in ancient Greece and is practiced in India mainly in the Islamic community. Unani’s approach to diseases involves the use of herbal preparations, dietary practices and alternative therapies. The main principle of Unani medicine is the need to gain a balance between the “four humours” of the human body which are crucial for health – these are blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile. It also believes that an imbalance in the four elements of nature – earth, fire, air, water – causes diseases. Here are some herbs and foods used in Unani that can boost immunity when used properly:

1. Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha has been found to boost immunity and increase energy levels. It is also said to have anti-ageing properties and even believed to stimulate and rejuvenate the human body for a healthier, balanced life.

2. Ginger
According to both Unani and Ayurveda systems of medicine, ginger has thermogenic and antibacterial properties. It is known to be helpful in curbing infections and increasing immunity. It is believed to be especially useful in treating respiratory disorders like common cold, asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, etc. It can also be used topically to provide relief to a lot of problems related to the joints and muscles such as gout, edema, arthritis, among a few.

3. Turmeric
Turmeric is used not only as a medicine, but also for various cooking purposes because of its known immunity boosting properties. It is said to provide a good balance between all the four humours of the body and is used to treat everything from skin disorders such as rashes and dry skin to common cold and joint pains. It is also used for its beautification properties by many women since it is believed to provide a natural glow to the skin.

4. Amla
Amla is known to be the best and richest natural source of vitamin C, containing even more vitamin C than oranges. Because of its strong antioxidant properties, it is known to increase the body’s resistance towards various diseases; Amla also has anti-inflammatory properties and reduces swelling and bloating. It also has cooling properties and reduces the free radicals in the body thus promoting overall good health.

5. Neem
Neem has been known since time immemorial to have powerful detoxifying, antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiviral properties. Along with being able to detoxify and purify your blood, it can help regulate proper liver functioning, relieve infections, aid in digestion and is used in a number of ailments such as gout and osteoarthritis. It is also known to be excellent for gaining healthy and radiant skin and hair.

Through the regular use of these herbs, you can successfully boost your immunity and ward off diseases the natural way – without having to turn to strong medicines all the time. But like every other forms of medicine, you should practice Unani medicine in consultation with someone who is experienced in the practiced.
